When someone talks about spending a day at the spa, the last thing you likely picture is a bunch of people soaking in tubs filled with the fixings you'd need to whip up some beers. What is a beer spa?

As the name implies, beer spas are beer-inspired getaways where people go for rest, rejuvenation, and a bit of recreation (hey, there is drinking after all). These establishments typically offer their own beverage service as part of the experience, according to The BBC, treating customers to a soak as well as some sips of their local brews.

The layout of these places can be as different as the drinks they have on tap, with some places looking to create more of a party scene where you'd expect to gather for a bachelor party, while others focus more on the wellness aspects of the spa.

What happens in a beer spa?

While each beer spa is different, there are a few things you can expect to enjoy no matter where you go. For example, almost every beer spa involves getting into a tub filled with some classic brewing ingredients, which include hops, brewer's yeast, malt, and a dash of actual beer. You're expected to hang out in the tub for a bit, typically while sipping on some beer as you soak.

And soak you'll want to, since often times these tubs are also jetted hot tubs, which provide a refreshing water-based massage while you soak in the warm water.

Beer spa benefits:

Other than the joys you'll get from soaking in a tub for a little bit, the beer spas say that there are some wellness properties included in the items they add to the water. Beer spas claim that their treatments are specially designed to help with a range of ailments, including:

  • Stress (hops)
  • Congested skin (hops)
  • Aging (brewer's yeast)
  • Weakened immune system (brewer's yeast and malt).

How to find a beer spa near you:

If all of this sounds appealing to you, the very next thing you're going to want to do is find the nearest beer spa and book a session. I recommend reading Yelp reviews, and checking out any first person accounts from other people's experiences to ensure that you're getting the kind spa day that you're hoping for.

If you're willing to put a few miles on your car (or else, earn some of those Frequent Flyer rewards), you can always check out some famous beer spa locations from around the world, including Hotel Metamorphis in Prague, Czech Republic, Landhotel Moorhof in Franking, Austria, and Oakwell Beer Spa in Denver.

No matter where you go, just make sure you have a designated driver to take you home, because even if you don't imbibe during your trip you're definitely going to smell like you did! And that's something that may raise a few eyebrows if you happen to get pulled over.
