Taking care of your hair can feel like a full-time job. Between changing seasons and climate-change-induced temperatures rising, your locks might not be at their healthiest. Even if you are using your tried and true arsenal, sometimes, what these companies put in their formulas could make your crown thin and brittle.

Luckily there are some great, natural ways to make masks that make your hair stronger than ever. Here are some of the best homemade hair masks for hair growth and thickness that can revamp your tresses and help keep them safe from the elements. Plus, they're easy to make and natural.

Check out a coconut oil and honey hair mask.

Hairstylist Nycole Jones told Oprah Daily that this mix is great for people with dry, damaged hair. Plus, it's a welcomed choice if you have split ends. All you need is one tablespoon of organic, unrefined coconut oil and one tablespoon of raw honey.

Mix the ingredients in a bowl. You can put this all over your hair, wet or dry, but focus on the ends. Keep the mixture in your hair for about 30 minutes before rinsing it out. Then, shampoo and condition as you usually would.

Castor oil is also a healthy choice.

Castor oil is well-known for its health benefits. Many use it to relieve constipation, but WebMD says it could help heal wounds, act as an anti-inflammatory, and even induce labor. My Coco Soul has pointed out that this oil is also a great choice for your hair.

To make a hair mask with castor oil, here is what you need:

  • 1 tablespoon of almond oil
  • 1 tablespoon of ground fenugreek seeds
  • 3 tablespoons of castor oil

Although you can likely buy both oils at your local grocery store, fenugreek seeds might be easier to find at health food stores or ethnic markets. You may have to ground them yourself.

Once you have all the ingredients, mix them in a bowl and apply the result throughout your hair, including your scalp. Rinse it off after 30 minutes, then wash your hair with a mild shampoo.

If you have a dry scalp in particular or deal with dandruff, this mix is the right one for you. My Coco Soul also points out that the fenugreek seeds are high in iron and protein.

Try this Greek yogurt mask.

If you are tired of dealing with breakage, Self Magazine says this hair mask is right for you. Celebrity hairstylist Annagjid “Kee” Taylor told the publication that proteins in the yogurt and egg will give your hair that needed strength.

This is what you need:

  • 1 cup of plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon of castor oil
  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil

To start, mix your yogurt in a bowl until it's smooth. Then mix in the other ingredients until everything is even. Apply it and cover your head in plastic. A plastic shower cap should do the job. Leave this on your hair for at least an hour. Afterward, rinse your hair.

There are two ingredients you need in an overnight mask.

Healthline points out that not every ingredient we've listed is a good choice if you're looking for an overnight option. Bananas, however, are a great overnight option. They are antimicrobial, so they help with flakes and dryness. Plus, they have antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that can give your hair much-needed moisture.

To make a hair mask with bananas, mix one tablespoon of honey with one or two ripe bananas. How many bananas you need depends on how long your hair is. When you apply it, focus on your scalp and ends.

Make an overnight mask with aloe vera.

If bananas aren't your thing Healthline also mentions that aloe vera is a great option for your hair thanks to all its vitamins and minerals. To make a hair mask with this key ingredient, you need two tablespoons of aloe vera and two tablespoons of organic coconut oil.

With low heat, heat the oil on the stove and gently stir it as you go. When you're done, the oil should be warm but not hot. Then, pour the melted oil into a bowl and add aloe vera. Mix the oil and the aloe vera until it develops a paste-like consistency. Then, add it to your hair.

If you have dry hair, you can do an overnight mask at most a couple nights a week. If you have oily hair, you should only do this once every two weeks.
