FEBRUARY 12, 2009 Inauguration Attendees Fail to Demonstrate Change

What happened to "Walk It In, Walk It Out?" When the crowds moved off the Washington mall following Obama's inauguation, they left behind 130 tons of litter. Yikes! I gotta say, I'm a little surprised. Afterall, this is a president who stands for personal responsibility and earth stewardship and who took steps to make this the "greenest" inauguration in history. Obviously more than a little debris would be expected from 2 million gatherers, but the volume of trash was so huge that it took a small army or Public Works' vehicles and men and women armed with leaf blowers and brooms working past dawn the next day to clean up every last piece of garbage.

When Obama campaigned on a message of change, he wasn't just talking about government, he was talking about Americans. An opportunity to change was ignored on inauguration day when the litterers in the crowd chose not to carry out their garbage, as encouraged to do by inauguration organizers, and instead dropped thier disposal cups, water bottles and food wrappers at there feet and went home.

I think it's safe to say that Mr. Obama's supporters, myself included, are expecting a lot from him, and we would be severely disappointed if he let us down. Let's not let him down.
