MAY 7, 2009 Craigslist Buyers are a Flakey Bunch on the Whole

My house is up for sale, so for weeks I've been clearing the cutter to make my home "show" better, and have begun downsizing to ultimately lighten my load by moving day. I've been taking pictures of things of value I want to sell and slowly posting them on the website Craigslist. Right now I have about two dozen separate ads on Craigslist, and things are not going well. What's up with buyers on Craigslist these days? Potential buyers have gotten so flaky, that I've about had it. I've replied affirmatively to dozens of inquiries about the availabilty of posted items never to hear from the inquirer again. I've been promised more cash to hold something only to never hear from the pleading buyer again. I've been flattered with email after email gushing about the item for sale, promising a full price offer and an impending pick-up only to have the correspondence abruptly stop. I've scheduled appointment after appointment with buyers only to be stood up over and over again. The bottom line is, I've "almost" sold things several times, but 90 percent--no exaggeration--of the buyers that contact me flaked out on me, with not so much as an email of apology. The bit of anonymity afforded buyers fishing around on Craigslist has made many of them abandon good manners and respect for other's time. It's enough to make me want to give up. But then again, I'll probably never really give up on Craigslist, because working hard to make sure still-useful things find a second home is important to me.
